Sitat: The UK's official weather forecasters are determined that winters should be mild, in the face of the frozen facts, says Christopher Booker. Shortly after midnight on Friday morning, as 200,000 merrymakers were departing from the Thames after enjoying a spectacular fireworks show in sub-zero temperatures, flakes of snow began to fall on Whitehall. In light of the Met Office's prediction that this would be a "mild" winter, with temperatures above average, it seemed an apt way to start the New Year. But hasn't the time come for us to stop treating the serial inaccuracy of Met Office forecasts as just a joke and see it for what it is – a national scandal? The reason the Met Office so persistently gets its seasonal forecasts wrong is that it has been hi-jacked from the role for which we pay it nearly £200 million a year, to become one of the world's major propaganda engines for the belief in man-made global warming. Over the past three years, it has become a laughing stock for forecasts which are invariably wrong in the same direction. The year 2007, it predicted, would be "the warmest ever" – just before global tempratures plunged by more than the entire net warming of the 20th century, Three years running it predicted warmer than average winters – as large parts of the northern hemisphere endured record cold and snowfalls. Last year's "barbecue summer" was the third time running that predictions of a summer drier and warmer than average prefaced weeks of rain and cold. Last week the Met Office was again predicting that 2010 will be the "warmest year" on record, while Europe and the US look to be facing further weeks of intense cold. ..
Quote: FRESH doubts were cast over controversial global warming theories yesterday after a major climate change argument was discredited. The International Panel on Climate Change was forced to admit its key claim that Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035 was lifted from a 1999 magazine article. The report was based on an interview with a little-known Indian scientist who has since said his views were “speculation” and not backed up by research. It was also revealed that the IPCC’s controversial chairman, Dr Rajendra Pachauri, described as “the world’s top climate scientist”, is a former railway engineer with a PhD in economics and no formal climate science qualifications. Dr Pachauri was yesterday accused of a conflict of interest after it emerged he has a network of business interests that attract millions of pounds in funding thanks to IPCC policies. One of them, The Energy Research Institute, has a London office and is set to receive up to £10million from British taxpayers over the next five years in the form of grants from the Department for International Development. ..

Quote: Cutting greenhouse gases too expensive, Brewer says. Arizona will no longer participate in a groundbreaking attempt to limit greenhouse-gas emissions across the West, a change in policy by Gov. Jan Brewer that will include a review of all the state's efforts to combat climate change. Brewer stopped short of pulling Arizona out of the multistate coalition that plans to regulate greenhouse gases starting in 2012. But she made it clear in an executive order that Arizona will not endorse the emission-control plan or any program that could raise costs for consumers and businesses. State officials said the policy shift was rooted in concerns that the controversial emissions plan would slow the state's economic recovery. Brewer says the state should focus less on regulations and more on renewable energy and investments by businesses that can create green jobs. The governor also ordered the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to take another look at stricter vehicle-emissions rules set to take effect in 2012. Automakers said the rules, based on those adopted by California, would raise the cost of a new car significantly. ..
Quote: The Institute of Physics , representing 36,000 members, submits a devastating assessment of Climategate to the British parliamentary inquiry into the scandal: 2. The CRU e-mails as published on the internet provide prima facie evidence of determined and co-ordinated refusals to comply with honourable scientific traditions and freedom of information law. The principle that scientists should be willing to expose their ideas and results to independent testing and replication by others, which requires the open exchange of data, procedures and materials, is vital… 3. It is important to recognise that there are two completely different categories of data set that are involved in the CRU e-mail exchanges: · those compiled from direct instrumental measurements of land and ocean surface temperatures such as the CRU, GISS and NOAA data sets; and · historic temperature reconstructions from measurements of ‘proxies’, for example, tree-rings. 4. ..

Leuren Moret is a Berkley, California, activist who really knows nothing about either earthquakes or the University of Alaska international research program HAARP. She will say anything to get into the internet headlines with the expectation that people will invite her to speak. She loves travelling all over the world on someone else's money. It certainly beats working for a living. Moret has a BS in Geology, but has never worked as a Geologist, taught or did research beyond some research with the melting point of silicate minerals in the 80's. She has no knowledge of what causes earthquakes and no knowledge of radio wave propagation research. She has just taken up what her internet friend Rosalie Bertell claims to be true. Unlike Moret, Bertell appears to have once been a scientific researcher, but she clearly now says whatever will get her an internet headline. That's rather odd for someone who is a Catholic nun; they are supposed to have dedicated their lives to God, not to self-promotion. You can learn about HAARP at www.haarp.alaska.edu. I have also done a bit of research into earthquakes (my BA is also in Geology, but I do not claim to be an independent scientist or peddle myself as an expert). You can easily learn about major earthquakes anywhere in the world by going to http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/ - The Chilean earthquake can be easily found by expanding South America and looking for the 8.8 followed by a large number of aftershocks. Note the depth of the epicenter, 35 km. The deepest hole ever drilled was less than 13 km and took 24 years. That was a Soviet research project in Siberia. US seismic researchers created thousands of small earthquakes in Colorado by drilling into a fault line and injecting salt water. The largest of these was a barely perceptible 4.3 and most were so small that you would not have even noticed them if standing on the fault line. You can read about these at http://bssa.geoscienceworld.org/cgi/content/abstract/95/2/664 Deep-Injection and Closely Monitored Induced Seismicity at Paradox Valley, Colorado. You can read about the deepest hole in the ground, the Kola Superdeep Borehole at http://designdepartment.wordpress.com/2006/06/21/7-mile-deep-hole-i...
Quote: It is increasingly clear that the leak of the internal emails and documents of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in November has done for the climate change debate what the Pentagon Papers did for the Vietnam war debate 40 years ago—changed the narrative decisively. Additional revelations of unethical behavior, errors, and serial exaggeration in climate science are rolling out on an almost daily basis, and there is good reason to expect more. ..
Quote: Will CNN and MSNBC devote weeks of endless coverage to the violent extremist threat posed by radical greenies? An article carried by the official Greenpeace website written by a Greenpeace member urges climate activists to resort to criminal activity in an effort to reinvigorate momentum for their stalling global warming agenda, while ominously threatening climate skeptics, “we know where you live”. The article, written by Greenpeace activist “Gene” from India, calls for “mass civil disobedience to cut off the financial oxygen from denial and skepticism”. “Gene” then has a special message for roughly half of Americans who, in the wake of the climategate scandal, are now skeptical of man-made global warming – “We know who you are. We know where you live. We know where you work. And we be many, but you be few.” “Gene” quotes another climate activist who calls for an army of greenies to break the law and take retribution against anyone who stands in their way. ..
Quote: IF you thought it was cold in Britain for the time of year, you should see what is happening around the North Pole. Scientists have discovered that the size of the Arctic ice cap has increased sharply to levels not seen since 2001. A shift in the chilly winds across the Bering Sea over the past few months has caused thousands of square miles of ocean to freeze. The same phenomenon, known as the Arctic Oscillation, is also partly responsible for the cold winter experienced in northern Europe and eastern America. It allowed icy blasts of air to escape from the Arctic and make their way southwards. Provisional Met Office figures for December to February suggest the UK had its coldest winter since 1979, with an average temperature of 1.6C — a full 2.1C below normal. Last week a teenager was killed in Scotland when a school bus crashed in the snow — just days into British Summer Time. ..
